First HKS Israel Palestine Trip

The first HKS Israel-Palestine was a blast.
I knew it was going to be exciting, but the trip actually exceeded my expectations.

If 7 days of getting up at 6:30am, having a jam packed schedule with high ranking people from all political orientations, running from one appointment to the next - usually too late- and non stop socializing with KSG students from 20+ countries sounds like fun to you, then you would have enjoyed it, too.

We've seen a green and lush Golan Heights and a barren Negev desert, met Israeli peaceniks and Air Force commanders, talked with thoughtful Palestinian Harvard alums and listened to fiercely polarized speeches. We sat in an Israeli F-16 fighter plane and watched Palestinian mechanics repair our bus tyre with ancient looking tools (it worked). We've seen the holocaust museum and covered ourselves in mud before diving into the dead sea. Saed Atshan (MPP) opened the Westbank for us and gave us insights into the less pleasant side of Middle Eastern Politics.

We've seen a wall twice the size of the old Berlin wall and heard good reasons for its existence one day and good reasons for its demolishment the next.

Above all, we've had the best guides one could ask for: Naomi, Uri and Yehuda (all MPPs) who patiently answered all our questions and always resisted the temptation of showing us a positively biased side of their country. Instead, they "respected our intelligence" as Scott put it and exposed us to the full scope of the Israeli and Palestine political landscape and allowed us to draw our own conclusions.

Imagine a twenty year old bus full of sleep deprived and over caffeinated KSG students heatedly arguing as if their lives depended on it while bumping down a potholed Palestine road, running late again with a barely fixed rear tyre, and you get the idea of this trip.

Check it out.

Jamie Snashell's Blog -

Hey everyone,

Here is a link to Jamie's blog called The Befuddled Foreigner. As usual it is full of humor and interesting observations of what it means to be an Australian in America.

Enjoy

Graduation Information

Jane Whittaker sent out a link by email for information on a graduation schedule which I will copy below.

Graduation Information link

In addition some people have been talking about needing tickets for graduation for out of town guests, while others have said that they do not have guests coming and might have extra tickets. To facilitate matching these people up, I have created a poll where you can request or offer tickets. Remember - tickets cannot be sold, but I believe you can offer unused tickets to colleagues for free.

Poll link for Ticket swap

Hopefully these three links work and they will help us help each other out.

Job Search Websites

Now that Spring Break is over, job search fever seems to be upon us all. After speaking with other MCs in Littauer this afternoon, I decided to post some of the job websites I've found and have been browsing. I welcome other submissions. If you know of something, add it here or send it to me and I'll post it. Share the wealth!

NewEnglandJobs.org: A regional listing provided by Non-Profit Jobs Cooperative.
http://www.nonprofitjobscoop.org/searchJobs&id=5

Non-Profit Jobs Cooperative: is a collaboration of nonprofit management centers from across the United States. Our goal is to provide a one-stop source for job seekers to search for nonprofit jobs, and for employers to easily publish job opportunities within specific regions.

Higher Ed: HigherEdJobs.com was founded in 1996 to list open positions at colleges and universities. Today, HigherEdJobs.com has one of the largest job databases focused exclusively on college and university positions. While some employment web sites list open positions in every industry, HigherEdJobs.com concentrates on open positions in higher education. Our goal is to provide a recruitment tool that adds value to the job seeker and recruiter by providing cost-effective, innovative, useful, and timely services in all areas of the site.

Automated Jobs Emails

I'm sure some of you have found this feature already, but it's a bit buried and unpublicized. You can receive a daily, automatic email of new job postings from the OPD jobs database that fit your search criteria. I set it up over the Christmas break and there are many mid-tier and executive tier jobs that come through. It seems to be a significantly different mix than the job fairs OPD puts together.

You can narrow the criteria by both geographic region and industry, making it very useful overall.

To set up your search criteria and get the automatic emails, follow these directions.

  • Log into the KSG Intranet site.
  • Choose Directories / Maps ---- Student Profile Pages on the left menu.
  • Click the tiny ‘my profile’ link in the far upper left of the page.
  • Choose ‘Edit Profile’ from the list under your picture.
  • Go to the ‘Job Search’ section. Fill out the search criteria and check the box “Please send me postings that match”. You get an automated email every night at 11:00 PM of the new postings that fit your criteria.
  • Submit your changes.
While you're in here, you might want to look at the other options. I don't know how often the database is searched, but it can't hurt to have some basics entered and to have checked the security setup so your comfortable with what's being shared.

Happy hunting!

Classical Music in Harvard

I thought I might spread the news (if necessary) that there are loads of excellent classical concerts in Sanders Theatre (Memorial Hall).
Memorial Hall is the beautiful old building near the Science Center, right opposite the Graduate School of Design.
Students can buy 2 tickets for $8 during student rush or order by phone for the regular price.
